Technology/Science behind Mira

How does Mira compare to other tracking devices such as Inito or Proov?

Mira uses fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay technology, which is more accurate and sensitive than the nano-gold technology used by other trackers (e.g., Proov, Inito). Fluorescent analyzers, like Mira, provide quantitative results preferred by providers. Read more here.

How does Mira compare to Dutch?

Mira offers several advantages over traditional dried urine testing, such as the Dutch test, by utilizing laboratory-grade immunofluorescence technology, providing immediate results, and enabling remote monitoring. These features make Mira a highly efficient and convenient option for tracking hormone levels and trends in real time. In contrast, Dutch requires a dried urine sample to be collected, mailed, and analyzed at the Dutch laboratory, which typically takes up to three weeks to return results. Additionally, Mira and Dutch use different sets of urine metabolites, which means their results cannot be directly compared.

While Mira can replace Dutch cycle mapping, it can also complement Dutch testing, which provides insights into adrenal function, organic acids, and metabolite pathways. For instance, Mira can help accurately time interventions and assessments, such as conducting a Dutch Complete test seven days after ovulation. This approach is more reliable than using a generic cycle day 21 result, as ovulation timing varies significantly between women. Testing seven days post-ovulation offers a more precise reflection of hormonal activity.

While Dutch offers a detailed snapshot of hormone levels, Mira's real-time monitoring and trend analysis provide continuous insights, making it particularly beneficial for ongoing interventions and personalized healthcare strategies.

What is the reliability and validity of Mira?

Mira is reliable and valid when used correctly. It tracks hormone trends accurately and align well with serum hormone levels, as demonstrated by clinical research. Internal checks and calibrations ensure consistent performance. Additionally, Mira’s coefficient of variation (CV) falls within industry standards, and internal studies comparing Mira to the Abbott Architect i2000SR have shown a strong linear correlation.

Is Mira creatinine corrected?

No, creatinine correction is not necessary if patients follow fluid intake guidelines, as it does not significantly impact accuracy.

What else affects Mira data?

Fluid intake and hydration status can influence data, as well as medications like Clomid. Kidney disorders may alter urine composition and affect accuracy.

Does Mira track testosterone?

We currently do not track testosterone.

What medications, supplements, interventions are contraindicated with Mira?

Methylene Blue and high doses of Biotin should not be taken while using Mira for testing. We recommend discontinuing their use 5-7 days prior to testing. Other medications, supplements, and interventions may impact Mira data, so please refer to our protocols for specific guidelines.

Provider-Specific Educational Questions

Mira Data Interpretation

Can you speak of how urinary metabolites correlate with serum levels?

While research involving Mira has shown a strong correlation between serum hormone levels and urinary metabolites, it's crucial to understand that they are not directly equivalent (see research here). Urinary metabolites and serum hormones are measured in different units and reflect a correlation rather than a direct equivalence. Urinary metabolites, which are a result of the metabolism of serum hormones, offer a delayed reflection of these hormones. While urinary metabolite levels may fluctuate, they generally align with the overall pattern of serum hormone levels.

Therefore, instead of comparing specific data points, it's more effective to focus on trends over time. Many healthcare providers utilize a combined approach, employing continuous monitoring with devices like Mira to track trends and periodic serum tests to obtain precise snapshots of hormone levels at specific points in time.

In conclusion, while Mira can be a valuable tool for monitoring hormone trends, it's important to remember that it's not a substitute for traditional serum hormone tests.

Is there a threshold of PdG that is confirmatory for ovulation?

To confirm an ovulatory event using Mira PdG, you can look for one of these two patterns:

Option 1- Three-Day Rise: Three consecutive days of rising PdG levels, with each day at least 1.25 times higher than the previous day after an LH surge.

Option 2 - Sustained Elevated PdG: Multiple PdG levels consistently higher than baseline following an LH surge. For additional detail please refer to our interpretation guide.

Technology Related

In this section, we delve into the technology behind Mira and how it compares to other hormone tracking devices. Discover how urinary metabolites correlate with serum hormone levels, the advantages of Mira's advanced technology, and the reliability and validity of the device. Learn about the factors that can affect Mira's data and how our technology ensures accurate and insightful hormone tracking.

Can you speak of how urinary metabolites correlate with serum levels?

  1. Team Mira: Serum hormone levels and urinary metabolites show a strong correlation, as supported by research studies involving Mira (see research here). However, direct comparison between serum and urine metabolites is not feasible due to different measurement units and delays in metabolite levels. While urinary metabolites generally align with serum hormone patterns, they cannot be used to determine exact serum levels. Instead of comparing specific data points, it's more effective to focus on trends over time. Many providers use Mira for continuous monitoring and serum tests for snapshot assessments at specific points in time. You can speak to the Mira team in further detail and trial a sample here.
  2. Dr. Sarah Pederson, MD: I have patients get their blood drawn during the same cycle they are tracking with Mira to calibrate their Mira data.

How does Mira compare to other tracking devices such as Proov?

There are two major technologies utilized by hormone monitor manufacturers. The first is the traditional nano-gold labeled lateral flow assay and the second is fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay.

Fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay offers a distinct advantage in terms of accuracy and sensitivity, this is because fluorescent molecules emit a stronger and more easily detectable signal. In turn, this enhances the detection of low concentrations of target analytes (such as hormone molecules in urine samples) – providing individuals with more accurate and reliable test results.

Most hormone trackers (e.g. Inito, Proov, Oova), use the traditional nano-gold technology as it is more simple and cost-effective. However, these trackers are not as accurate as trackers that utilize fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay technology (which is used in laboratories). Of all hormone trackers, Mira is the only tracker that leverages fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay technology.

Mira employs its state-of-the-art high-precision professional fluorescent detector, the Mira Analyzer, to read Mira test wands. In contrast, Inito relies on the smartphone's camera to read the colors on the Inito tests. Professional fluorescent analyzers are the only way to obtain truly quantitative results and preferred by providers over smartphone cameras due to much higher accuracy and sensitivity.

What is the reliability and validity of Mira?

Mira is both reliable and valid in its home hormone tracking capabilities. The device consistently provides accurate results when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with regular daily use ensuring dependable measurement of hormone levels. Mira undergoes internal quality checks and calibration to uphold its performance standards.

Research and clinical studies have demonstrated that Mira's hormone measurements generally align well with serum hormone levels, although direct comparisons between urine metabolites and serum hormones have certain limitations. Despite this, Mira effectively reflects overall hormonal patterns, even if it does not provide exact serum equivalents.

The validity of Mira is further supported by research showing that it reliably identifies trends in hormone levels. Additionally, Mira’s coefficient of variation (CV) falls within industry standards, and internal studies comparing Mira to the Abbott Architect i2000SR have shown a good linear correlation.

Is Mira creatinine corrected?

At this stage, Mira does not adjust for creatinine levels. Our internal experiments have shown that creatinine levels do not significantly impact or improve the accuracy of the results. As long as patients follow recommended fluid intake guidelines, creatinine correction is not necessary.

What else affects Mira data?

Hormonal data with Mira can be influenced by fluid intake and hydration status, but daily tracking helps to identify trends and minimize the impact of any outliers. We recommend limiting oral limit to less than 100 ml before going to bed and during the night. Medications like Clomid and letrozole can affect E3G levels, but tracking these levels with Mira is useful for evaluating whether a patient responds positively or fails to ovulate, given the individualized nature of treatment responses. Individuals with kidney disorders should refrain from using Mira for testing, as their urine samples may be abnormally concentrated or diluted due to their condition. This altered urine composition can significantly impact the accuracy of hormone measurements, leading to potentially unreliable results.

Yes, our app is free. But, our app is tied to our main solution: the Mira Analyzer and Mira Wands. This means that our business model is much different from free period and ovulation tracking apps. Our physical products cost money—that’s why our app is free.

Meaning: we don’t sell (and we won’t ever sell) user data to any third parties—advertisers, data brokers, whoever.

To be completely transparent: like every consumer brand, we use trusted and carefully selected service providers, such as data analytics tools, to process data on our behalf.

For these purposes, we share as little data as possible and anonymize all sensitive data. It’s also important to note that our data collection and sharing processes are HIPAA and GDPR-compliant, meaning we only share the data from the app with HIPAA-compliant platforms.

In short, we do not make any money from sharing data with our trusted partners. The data is used solely to provide better solutions for our customers, and we spend money to achieve this.

Review Mira’s full privacy policy here.

How does Mira ensure the protection of user data?

Mira has always counted on highly comprehensive security measures that protect your data.

Here are just a few of the tools we use to keep your data protected:

  • All data is encrypted (and double encrypted when necessary) for your safety. We also use high-security data storage.
  • Our user management system is only provided to a limited number of Mira’s customer support team members, enabling them to answer customer queries and interpret data. Only a few people have access to the tools we use to look into the database.
  • We provide internal employee training on online threats and privacy issues related to reproductive rights.

Finally, as a customer, you have an option to permanently delete your account at any time—per your request. Clearing this data will essentially reset the app to its default state, making it act like when you first downloaded and installed it.
